The large, peaceful parks in downtown San Diego beckon visitors to lay out a blanket and enjoy a picnic. The largest park in downtown San Diego is Balboa Park. This city park ranks as one of the largest in the nation and offers picnickers endless options for enjoying a meal outdoors. At Balboa Park, picnickers can eat at a table, choose a quiet, private spot on the soft grass, or settle near a playground. One of the most popular picnicking areas in Balboa Park is Pepper Grove Park. In this little area there are 15 picnic tables and a large playground. If you feel like walking around, there are also many free activities in Balboa Park to enjoy.

On the corner of Harbor Lane and the Pacific Highway is Ruocco Park, another great place downtown for a picnic. This park has large flat grassy perfect for picnicking and an after meal game of soccer or Frisbee. Ruocco Park gives visitors stunning views of the San Diego Bay and has a meandering walkway where you can take a leisurely stroll or bike ride.

Picnickers who want an ocean view while they eat can venture to one of the many parks along the shores of the San Diego Bay. The large Embarcadero Park has ample choice for waterfront picnic areas. Added perks of this park include: plenty of parking, a fishing pier, basketball courts, gazebos and a concession stand. The Embarcadero Park is also conveniently situated on the bay side of the San Diego Convention Center, making it easy to find.

On the north side of Embarcadero Park is another great oceanfront picnic area called Seaport Village. This quaint collection of boutique shops and little restaurants provides a calm backdrop for your picnic. There are many restaurants and dining options in Seaport Village that offer take out, making picnicking a simple and easy activity to enjoy with the family. Along Seaport Village’s wide walkway are shaded grassy hills to throw down a blanket on and enjoy your take-out meal.
