Winter is officially upon us and it’s time for San Diegans to prepare for ski and snowboard season! The best place to get everything you could possibly need is at this weekend’s San Diego Snow Jam Expo at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Tickets for the annual event are $15 online or $18 at the door, which also come with a free Snow Valley lift ticket and a SnowJam Card which has discounts on lift tickets and gear throughout the whole season.
After you grab all your gear and you’re set for the season, the question is where to go.The top snow resorts for San Diego vacationers and locals alike, just a couple hours away in San Bernardino County, are:
- Big Bear Mountain and Snow Summit
- Mountain High
- Snow Valley
- Mt. Baldy
And then there’s Mammoth Mountain. Mammoth is a massive resort about six hours north of San Diego. If you don’t feel like a road trip just grab a hotel near the San Diego airport and hop on a direct flight the next morning. From December 13 through April 13, Alaskan Airlines offers direct flights on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from the San Diego International Airport to Mammoth Lakes. The $80 one-way plane ticket is definitely worth the breathtaking views and immaculate slopes from an 11,000’ elevation (nearly twice as tall as Big Bear).
If you want a little snow closer to home, you can drive to Palomar Mountain in San Diego County! In December and January you will likely find some great snow tubing spots but leave the skis at home. Palomar Mountain State Park doesn’t allow any skiing or snowboarding, but it is a great day trip for San Diego families and friends.
Maybe, being a San Diegan and all, snow isn’t your thing. You can always stay in your sunny hometown and celebrate winter festivities near Little Italy. On December 7 you can partake in their Tree Lighting Ceremony within a snow-free Christmas Village. There will be vendors, food, hot cider, live music, dancing and did we mention food?
