The Little Italy Summer Film Festival shows fantastic Italian movies every Saturday night from the middle of June to the end of August at the Amici Park amphitheater, which is on the corner of State and Date streets. Admission is $5 per person for each show, which starts at 8:00 p.m. Just remember, no pets or alcoholic beverages are allowed, and the movie won’t be rescheduled if it rains. Since it almost never rains in San Diego during the summer, you shouldn’t have to worry too much about your evening being ruined.
Some of the excellent films you can expect include Giuseppe Tornatore’s suspense movie, “The Unknown Woman”, Giulio Menfredonia’s heartfelt comedy, “We Can Do That”, and Elio Petri’s Oscar-winning thriller, “Investigation of a Citizen Beyond Suspicion”. There’s something for everyone from adult thrillers to family films, and all these movies have been made by Italy’s finest contemporary directors. People come from miles around to see these great films, so you should make sure to come at least an hour early.
If you’re looking for somewhere to go after watching the movie, then keep the Italian flavor going with an excellent dinner at Cafe Zucchero, which is just two blocks away from Amici Park. This restaurant offers unique pastries that you won’t find anywhere else, including the cassata, and they also have fine dishes such as rigatone palermitana, calamari parmagiana and saltimbocca. And if you like fine wine, then you’ll love the nearly 65 wine varieties that Cafe Zucchero offers.
If Italian isn’t your preference, the Princess Pub & Grille can be found on the corner of Date and India streets. This is considered San Diego’s first and finest English pub and offers up classics such as fish & chips, steak & ale pie and homemade Cornish pasties.
