Ways to Explore Historic Old Town San Diego

If visiting Old Town is in your San Diego vacation plans, you’ll definitely want to see all of the historical sites, landmarks and museums. To ensure you make the most of your day sightseeing in Old Town, consider going on a tour of the area. From walking tours to trolley rides, there are many ways in which visitors can learn about the history and the culture of the area.

Self-Guided Tours for the Adventurous

Visitors who like to travel at their own pace can embark on a self-guide tour of Old Town. Upon entering the city, stop at the visitor’s center where you can pick up a map of the area. There will be a suggested route that will take you past the major sites and landmarks or you can pick and choose the attractions that appeal to your personal interests. If you’re short on time, consider visiting the local museums. Many, including the popular Mormon Battalion Museum, feature free tours of their exhibits.

Discover Old Town with the Experts

There are also a variety of volunteer led tours that are conducted by locals and residents who have a passion for the history of the area. These tours are a great option for first time visitors as they highlight specific sites and museums while also giving a general overview of the entire neighborhood. Among the tours available is the popular ghost tour where visitors are able to test their sense of adventure by walking through and around the grounds of the haunted Whaley house.

Another option for exploring Old Town is the popular trolley tour. Visitors can see Old Town’s key historical sites while sitting in the comfort of an open aired trolley. Riders can exit the trolley at any of the visited sites along the route for a more in-depth tour look at the destinations that interest them. The bus passes each site every thirty minutes, allowing visitors to easily hop back on after checking out a particular site. The first Old Town tour starts at 9am and the last tour is offered two hours before the trolley stops operating for the day. Hours of operation vary throughout the year, so check for specific times upon arriving in Old Town.
