History of Downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter
In 1867, the Gaslamp Quarter began as a way to improve Downtown San Diego and provide better access to the bay. The district covered over 16 blocks and included a variety of businesses with the hope of progressive development. It became recognized as “New Town” in contrast to “Old Town” and was named specifically after the gas lamps that were common in both the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
While some development began during this time, several years later, the area began to decline into a “redlight” district. The Gaslamp Quarter gained a poor reputation and the city’s development expanded away from the heart of Downtown, leaving it to deteriorate further.
In the early 1980′s the Gaslamp Quarter Association (GQA) was formed to begin redeveloping the old business community and restore the area. Renovations of the Victorian style buildings brought the area back to life. Today, the Gaslamp Quarter is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a popular destination for San Diego vacationers staying at hotels near Gaslamp Quarter San Diego, and includes over 400 restaurants, shops, entertainment venues, hotels, artisan shops and many other business developments.
