What is a vacation to San Diego if you don’t experience the vibrant, trendy and laid back San Diego hipster scene? A hipster is typically someone in their 20s and 30s who follows the latest trends. Urban Dictionary describes a hipster as someone who shuns “mainstream societal conventions “ and values “independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.”
The word “hipster” has made a strong comeback in the last few years. During the 1950s it was used to refer to someone who isolated themselves while wallowing alone with soulful jazz music. This dated definition applies to much of what we know about hipsters today. A modern day hipster will usually be found sporting some form of facial hair –preferably a handlebar mustache- while drinking PBR in a tallboy can, because it’s ironically cliché. While not everyone may understand the pinings and attitudes of a San Diego hipster, none can deny that our nightlife scene is hip indeed.
Here are some of the top bars and clubs where the local hipsters congregate:
- Craft and Commerce | 675 W. Beech Street, Little Italy
The outside of this bar and restaurant is covered in green shrubbery, the inside displays chalk board quotes and classic novels all while the Bible or some other dramatic book-on-tape is being played in the restrooms. I think it’s safe to say that this is a token hipster bar. For a safe menu option, order the mini corn dogs, but if you want to experiment then give the roasted bone marrow a shot! You also can’t leave before trying one of their mason jar cocktails like the Black Sheep with coffee bean-infused whiskey. - The Lion’s Share | 629 Kettner Blvd., Downtown
This classic hipster bar, located next to top San Diego Convention Center hotels, oozes class and sophistication instead of pretentiousness and nonchalance. Their dim lit lounge is covered in eclectic art work and a mounted antelope head, ironic because of the antelope sliders that sell like hot cakes on their menu. Grab a seat at the bar where you can chat up the friendly bartenders, or mixologists, while you nibble on an Exotic Sausage board. Cheese, apparently, is overrated.
- Tiger!Tiger! | 3025 El Cajon Blvd., North Park
Beer, bicycles, beards and burgers! This bar has everything that a hipster could hope for. Lock up your bike on the railing outside before you stop in for some truffle fries, coconut glazed donuts or pork belly. Of course, you’ll need to order one or three of their rotating craft beers to wash it all down.
