The San Diego Marine Corp Recruit Depot is about more than just recruiting and training new soldiers. The MCRD hosts a ton of helpful events for military personnel, visitors to San Diego and local civilians. Whether you’re newly stationed in San Diego or just visiting the city, the events listed below could help you and your family familiarize yourself with the surrounding area.
Back to School Brigade
On August 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Back to School Brigade will be held in the MCRD field house. This event aims to help children in kindergarten through 12th grade ease back into a school schedule. Parents will be able to visit the booths for school related information and each child will receive a backpack and school supplies. On August 21st at Building 6E, children ages 5 to 12 can participate in an interactive discussion about back-to-school readiness. From 9 a.m.to 1 p.m. children will discuss goals, healthy eating and how to be a good classmate. This is a great event for military families, especially those new to San Diego, to help children acclimate to a new school year.
New Gourmet Food Trucks
This past summer gourmet food trucks began making a regular appearance at MCRD, offering new foods for our San Diego soldiers. Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from 1030 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., MCRD personnel are treated to different food trucks as part of Curb Bites. Curb Bites brings the area’s top food trucks, such as Super Q and Crepes Bonaparte, to make an appearance at the MCX Mall.
4 Lenses Workshop
On September 18, from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Marine Family Teams Building room in 6E, the 4 Lenses Workshop will take place. This workshop is only open to Federal Government employees and anyone who is or was in the military. This workshop is based on the idea presented in the Myers- Briggs and Kiersey Temperament Indicator test, which claims that each person is a piece of the puzzle of humanity. People attending this workshop will learn about why people think and act the way they do and how they fit into life. For more information or to sign-up online, visit 4lensesmcrdsd.eventbrite.com.
On September 27, the MCRD Boot-camp Challenge will kick into high gear. This 3-mile course promises a military style challenge for participants as they crawl through mud, hop over bales of hay, scramble up 6-foot walls and somehow eventually make it past the 40 total obstacles to the finish line. Real Marine Corps drill instructors will be standing watch at each obstacle to make sure you properly complete the task, so slackers need not apply. Everyone who completes the course will be rewarded with a post-race party complete with beer, music food and an awards ceremony for the top 3 finishers.
