The annual Coronado Flower Show is California’s premier flower show, and the largest tent flower show in the nation. The flower show takes up almost an entire city block including flower exhibits, a wine and beer garden, and live music performances scheduled throughout the day. If you’re staying at one of the downtown San Diego hotels this weekend and are looking for affordable fun this weekend, this is an event you don’t want to miss. Not only is it open to the public, admission is only $5 per person!
A beloved community tradition for more than eight decades, the Coronado Flower Show is a true piece of Americana. When the flower show first began in 1922, the local schools provided desks and typewriters for judging, the now famous Hotel Del lent trellises and tables, and the local Boy Scouts camped out in the park overnight to protect the exhibits, ensuring all were safe for the day of the show.
Today the Coronado Flower Show has come a long way, expanding in size and offering opportunities for professionals and community members alike to showcase their talents. In the weeks before the show, approximately 120 local volunteers judge entrees throughout the city, evaluating gardens and floral arrangements at commercial fronts, churches and school gardens, and at more than 6,000 individual homes.
Exhibitors at the two-day weekend event can enter a large selection of flower-related divisions, including holiday themed events, miniature arrangement section, themed design arrangements of cut flowers, tabletop designs including formal and informal table settings, and the very popular “Zoo’s Who” division which features whimsical animals created from fruits and vegetables. There are fresh cut flower divisions for roses, orchids, and hanging plants, and even sections for cacti and bonsai. Even children can join in the green-thumb-fun by entering the children’s competition for small floral arrangements and seed plate designs.
