$5 Ferry Rides Offer Views of San Diego’s Coronado Bridge
If visitors want a cheap but fun way to get around and see some of San Diego’s water-based sights, they certainly can’t beat riding the ferry. Skip the cramped taxis and head for the open seas for a guaranteed memorable experience that’s easy on the eyes and gentle on the wallet.
General Information about the Ferry
A ferry ride on the San Diego Ferry is a mere $4.25 per person for a one way trip (and children 4 and under ride free!). The ferry departs from two locations: the Broadway Pier and the Convention Center. Service begins every day at 9am from San Diego to Coronado and departs every hour on the hour. The ferry leaves Coronado back to San Diego every hour on the half hour starting at 9:30 am. Visitors can view the more detailed ferry schedule at www.sdhe.com/coronado-ferry.
Views from the Ferry Deck & Entertainment Galore
The fifteen minute ride is marked by cawing seagulls and white capped waves with the Coronado Bridge looming in the near distance the entire ride. The towering 2.1 mile, gently curved white bridge stands guard over the navy water while shiny white yachts dot the churning landscape. Once the ferry has slid past the gleaming bridge and landed at Coronado Ferry Landing, passengers can disembark and immerse themselves in an eclectic collection of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. Every other Sunday live bands entertain patrons while the Coronado farmers market offers local goodies every Tuesday afternoon.
What to do in Coronado
The jewels of the Coronado Bay are the impeccable beaches. Self proclaimed Coronado Beach is the town’s most popular shore destination, offering restrooms and showers, a dog beach, tidepools, and on duty lifeguards. The Glorietta Bay Beach is another favorite which provides the best view of the Coronado Bridge, as well as a grassy park and a playground for beach-weary children. All of Coronado’s beaches are ideal for surfing and paddle boarding, as well as body surfing and safe swimming!
